SUSTAINABILITY

Today for tomorrow

Our contribution

Based in the Elbtalauen-Wendland biosphere region, we experience the beauty and diversity of flora and fauna every day. Sustainable action to protect and preserve these valuable habitats has always been a matter close to our hearts, and respectful treatment of people and nature a matter of course.

Aware of our responsibility, we are always on the lookout for further ways to keep the impact of our business operations on the environment as low as possible, to compensate for it and to make a positive contribution to the common good. No matter whether through small steps or extensive measures.

Company site

Nature compensation areas with a watercourse and insect-friendly planting on nya nordiska’s premises in the centre of Dannenberg provide an attractive habitat all year round, and not just for bees. The electricity requirements of the business operations are covered 100% by green electricity from a regional supplier.

Saving resources

Measures such as switching to LED technology and using modern servers have enabled us to significantly reduce energy consumption in the company. The use of cloud-based systems has enabled a reduction of paper consumption by more than 50%.

Recycling

The use of recycled products and the avoidance of waste takes place wherever possible in the company’s operations. Packaging and protective fleece for shipping goods are made of recycled and/or recyclable material. Recycled paper is used for printing needs. The share of fabrics made from recycled materials such as PET bottles and wool in the total collection is continuously being increased. Products that are no longer sold regularly are used, among other things, as donations in kind and through the sale of remnants and special items.

Innovative, sustainable product development

Fabrics made from pure, renewable natural materials such as wool, cotton and linen have always made up a large part of the nya nordiska collection. Material blends are used less and less wherever possible to facilitate subsequent recycling. Thanks to our partners’ modern production techniques, we are more and more able to offer our customers items made from recycled (natural) materials that are in no way inferior to conventionally produced fabrics.

Responsible purchasing

More than 80% of our high-quality and durable fabrics are produced in Europe, where high standards for occupational safety and environmental protection apply. Production and working conditions of suppliers are transparent. Shorter transport routes lead to fewer emissions. We maintain a partnership with our suppliers, many of whom have long-standing business relationships with us. It is important to us to contribute to the preservation of these production sites and the comprehensive know-how available there. Our partners rely on innovative, sustainable production processes. A large number of them are certified according to Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®.

Social responsibility

nya nordiska provides guidance and opens up career opportunities through internships, in-company training and cooperation with universities. Students, regional organisations, assoziations, projects and events are supported. Employees benefit from a company pension scheme. The majority have been part of the nya nordiska team for many years. Labour and consumer protection have a high priority and are ensured through regular inspections. The majority of our fabrics come from producers who are certified according to Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®. This gives consumers the assurance of receiving textiles that have been tested for harmful substances and are harmless to health.

A sustainable gem. Marlene CS captivates us with gently shimmering embroidery in Trevira CS yarn in the form of curved lines that appear as if sketched by hand. The base fabric is Uni Marla CS produced with Trevira CS yarn obtained from recycled PET bottles. The modern combo of “Art to Use” and crafts-manship makes Marlene CS a typical nya nordiska design. Either tone-on-tone or featuring multi-coloured embroidery on a silvery grey or white background, this soft drapery fabric, which is fit for contract applications, perfectly blends in with contemporary architecture – both on its own or in combination with Marla CS.

A textile phoenix. The finely textured, easy-care plain-coloured Marla CS is composed of 50% Trevira CS yarn made from recycled PET bottles. The properties and quality of this fabric are identical to those obtained through production with normal polyester. The energy required and environmental burden generated by the manufacturing process, however, are considerably lower. Made up as a curtain and roman blind this double-width fabric in five modern tones brings transparent lightness to interiors qualifying for both residential and contract assignments with its certified flame-retardancy. So Marla CS combines versatile applications with smart resource-saving production.

The pure pre-washed linen combines semi-transparency with a soft touch and casual look. Colours range from non-colours and pastel shades to statement tones and are all characterised by the two-tone warp and weft look so typical of the material. Favourite stripes. Jona provides soft furnishing delights “en bloc”. Serving as the striped counterpart for Uni Jonte, this popular classic among patterns brings a fresh, 12 cm wide block stripe into textile play. The epitome of nya nordiska’s core competence, Jona combines natural fibres with Scandinavian clarity and stripes – and all of this in 16 powder tones and an informal look perfectly tuned to suit Jonte. These properties allow this versatile furnishing fabric to conquer interiors anywhere from country mansions to urban lofts. This linen fabric comes pre-washed and can be processed right away.

Our popular uni classic Fino gets some company: Fino Pin combines the casual, semi-transparent pure new wool╔s excellent characteristics with a new pinstripe design. Similar to its big brother, Fino Pin is available in double width and the colours wool white and three noble shades of grey. Another advantage: due to humidity regulating properties, wool can improve interior climates. Furthermore, wool is a renewable, biodegradable resource with isolating effects.

  • Boom

Woollen and sustainable. The Bodo Sperlein edition for nya nordiska is rounded off by Boom, an innovative upholstery fabric that can also serve as a heavy drapery. The print design on recycled wool combines the look and feel of its natural material with a sense of sustainability. Combined with a synthetic fibre component, this drapery and upholstery fabric boasts exceptional durability. Its graphic design corresponds to that of Blitz and can be made up without pattern repeats.

  • Bente

Upgrade for a classic. Bente re-interprets the pinstripes known from men╔s suits as a versatile soft furnishing fabric. As homely as it is abrasion-resistant, this 100% wool fabric “dresses” upholstered furniture in a timelessly beautiful way and is also suitable for draperies with an attractive double-face effect. It scores points with its indoor-climate improving properties and is even machine-washable on a wool cycle. Bente lends itself to numerous furnishing ideas – either in a straightforward solo appearance or in concert with Arik for a harmonious mixture of wool fabrics. The carefully coordinated colour scale always strikes the right note.

  • Arik

Cool Wool. Arik is a natural talent. Both lightweight, rugged with 35,000 Martindale rubs and easy-care it serves both as an elegant upholstery fabric and as a furnishing fabric with a beautiful drape and attractive reverse. Made of 100% wool it controls moisture and heat and can therefore contribute to the improvement of the indoor climate. With its soft feel it is also pleasant to touch. The cubic-abstract all-over design thrives on the contrast between warp and weft and – depending on the colour combination – produces either a modern Scandinavian effect or a charming retro look.

  • Alva FR

Woven air. This is as sheer as it gets in textile window drapes. The single-coloured gauze Alva FR fuses feather-weight transparency with ingeniously iridescent colour schemes. Different colour combinations in warp and weft shimmer in a plethora of nuances when hit by light while a carefully selected scale of non-colours and discreet pastel shades make for modern elegance. This double-width fabric with an organza feel combines a visual “breath of nothing” with a pleasantly dimmed incidence of light in residential and contract interiors.

  • Almina

City – Country – River. Almina is suitable for universal applications – from urban lofts to modern country homes. The semi-transparent fabric is an accomplished symbiosis of naturalness and modern technology: its piece-dyed base material made of recycled polyester features a typical linen look while the fancy yarn used for the fine, irregular vertical stripe looks hand-made. A texture reminiscent of the irregular surface of a river that breathes life into the pattern and interiors with four delicate natural tones.
