ABOUT US
nya nordiska
Clear forms and a reduction to the essentials have been our concept since the company was founded, making nya nordiska’s design signature unmistakable and many designs timeless classics. The influences and design principles characterized by the Scandinavian Design School trace back to the apprenticeships and travel years of the company founder Heinz Röntgen, who worked in different European textile printing companies after studying history of art. He returned with a clear vision back to Germany and founded in Dusseldorf 1964 the textile editeur company nya nordiska. His creative concepts and ideas still shape the company’s design and philosophy. “Absolutely contemporary, ultimately timeless”. This guiding principle is consistently reinterpreted by us.
In 2010, the company headquarters in Dannenberg in Lower Saxony, where today 50 employees work, was impressively expanded by Staab Architects by merging material, form and function into one unit with the existing half-timbered houses.
The reddish anodized metal façade of the extension remotely resembles Scandinavian wooden houses and blends harmoniously into the historic city shape as an interplay between old and new.
Today, nya nordiska is one of the leading international textile editeur companies with subsidiaries in Como and Tokyo. Our customers around the globe appreciate the variety of our curtains, decoration and upholstery fabrics. Over the years, design influences from across Europe and the world have been added to the typically Scandinavian colours and forms. Inspired by the modern design language, magnificent colours of the Orient, the Parisian chic or the original philosophy, our collections offer a wide range of textiles that create new perspectives for interior decoration and set new design standards. Thus, many of our fabrics have been repeatedly rewarded with international prices for design, function and innovation. Timeless stripe and check fabrics in modern colours, innovative mesh and metal fabrics, pleats and plain fabrics that fulfil contract-fitted safety regulations and visual requirements at once are our trademarks.
Innovation, outstanding design and the highest standards in quality and functionality are guiding factors, we work on every day. In doing so, we rely on partnership-based cooperation with our customers and suppliers and understand our responsibility not at least in Dannenberg and surrounding by supporting the next generation with training programmes.
DESIGN
OUR
DESIGNPHILOSOPHY
“For us it is the essence, what makes the special.”
It can be a word, an impression, a location, an experience – art and fashion, architecture, technology, movie and theatre, nature and society can be a source for inspiration. From everyday events to very special moments in life. Various creative minds shape our design team, creating a common whole from their individual ideas. Differing paths and imprints merge in their creations: their experiences in haute couture, furniture industry and product design repeatedly lead to experiments with form, function and material. One aspect unites them all: the fascination and enthusiasm for Scandinavian design.
As creative tools, reduction and clarity take an important part in the design principles. A Bauhaus- inspired purism dominates the overall image of our collection. Stripes, delicate transparencies, large-scale organic patterns and structures, flowing fabrics, natural materials and colours symbolize the nya nordiska brand. Further to the fascination for the Scandinavian and Japanese understanding of design, the team draws its inspiration from the vast surrounding nature and its seasonal changing forms and colours.
It is the aesthetics of apparent simplicity that inspires us.
AWARDS
EXCELLENT
QUALITY
Our design competence has so far been honoured by over 300 awards such as the red dot award: product design, the iF product design award, the GOOD DESIGN Award of the Chicago Athenaeum and the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
By taking part in design competitions, we place our fabrics for judgement by an independent jury of experts, whose members are among international design leaders. To win the approval of these committees is a challenge that we wish to consistently face.
Regardless of any award for outstanding design, selected fabrics in our collection must have the potential to become timeless classics. The fact that we succeed in doing so is confirmed by many articles that have been in our collection for ten or even twenty years.
